"I Am a Hugger"

"I am a hugger

Which is not to say

I'll pull you in unasked,

fold you tightly

without consent -

no, I know the weight of walls,

the strength of space.

But it is to say

I linger in momemts,

where warmth becomes an echo,

where time slows its breath

against the edges of goodbye.

It is to say

my arms often

carry too much

not just you, 

but a history of holding on too long,

of fearing the quiet

when the closeness fades.

I am a hugger.

But only if you ask,

only if the curve of my arms

is the shape

you wish to lean into."
